The Gem, 1851-1855, a manuscript literary magazine with pen and ink illustrations, was edited by Arthur Random. The names of the authors and the editor are probably pseudonyms, with the possible exception of a few essays, and a letter to the contributors that is signed Harry Westwood. One of the contributions, a "Historical Sketch," tells of the settling of Georgia led by James Edward Oglethorpe. Some entries are dated Brooklyn, 1851; the last ones are dated from 1853-1855. There are several pages listing the names of women among whom the manuscript was to be circulated.
